Research abstract

The increasing complexity of modern power grids, driven by renewable energy integration, demand fluctuations, and extreme weather events, has created a critical need for advanced risk visualization and uncertainty quantification. Traditional grid management tools rely on deterministic forecasting, which lacks probabilistic insight into operational risks. This gap leads to inefficiencies in resource allocation, increased reliance on costly reserves, and heightened grid instability. The Department of Energy (DOE) has a vested interest in enhancing grid resilience and reliability through AI-driven solutions that enable risk-informed decision-making. VISIMO will develop GRIDview, an AI-driven uncertainty visualization platform that quantifies and visualizes probabilistic risks in real time, equipping grid operators with actionable insights for improved decision-making. GRIDview leverages Bayesian Neural Networks (BNNs), Gaussian Processes (GPs), and Ensemble Learning to assess epistemic and aleatory uncertainty, providing operators with clear visual risk assessments that traditional forecasting tools lack. This project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of integrating probabilistic forecasting into grid management, reducing operational uncertainty and enhancing reliability. Phase I will focus on proving the feasibility of GRIDview’s probabilistic forecasting and uncertainty visualization framework. The project will develop prototype models using publicly available datasets (NREL, NOAA, EIA) and validate their performance against deterministic forecasting benchmarks. A proof-of-concept interactive visualization platform will be developed, integrating uncertainty metrics to enhance operator decision-making. Additionally, Phase I will engage with key stakeholders to refine GRIDview’s real-world applicability and prepare for Phase II pilot deployment with utility partners. A successful Phase I effort will establish a foundation for full-scale operational testing and commercial deployment. Beyond utility grid operations, GRIDview’s AI-driven risk visualization technology has broad applications across multiple industries requiring real-time uncertainty quantification. The financial sector can leverage its probabilistic risk analysis for investment decision-making, while renewable energy developers can optimize power generation forecasts. Federal agencies, including DOE, FEMA, and DOD, can use GRIDview for resilience planning and infrastructure security. By enhancing decision-making in complex, uncertain environments, GRIDview contributes to improved energy reliability, cost savings, and reduced environmental impact through optimized renewable energy integration.
