Research abstract
In response to the Navy's challenges with manual maintenance record creation, VISIMO introduces the Artificial Intelligence-enhanced Maintenance Form Engine (AIM-FE). AIM-FE leverages Large Language Models (LLMs) to streamline the form completion process, addressing the current inefficiencies that lead to maintenance delays and reduced operational readiness for the Navy. AIM-FE will enhance Navy’s form-filling process with a user-friendly, prompt-generated workflow. It offers two pathways for form completion: a narrative summary or direct field inputs, both enhanced by LLM-driven suggestions for accuracy and completeness. The system's design caters to specific technical domains, handling specialized Navy language, and is scalable for cloud deployment. In selecting the most suitable model for AIM-FE, VISIMO focuses on Mixtral 8x7B from Mistral AI, known for its efficient Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture. This model enhances rapid learning, high-quality performance, and efficient resource usage. Challenges like model communication overhead and computational intensity will be addressed through innovative strategies including optimized routing, hardware acceleration, quantization, and pruning. VISIMO's approach includes Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) using real and synthetic form data. A unique feedback mechanism, leveraging user interactions, will continually enhance the model's accuracy. Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) will be used for efficient model training, tailored to the Navy's form completion standards. The performance of AIM-FE will be rigorously evaluated through feedback-based scoring, LLM-based scoring, and consistency-based scoring. These metrics will assess user satisfaction, model output quality, and consistency across varied inputs. To navigate the specialized language of Navy operations, AIM-FE incorporates a dynamic glossary, empowered by Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). This feature ensures clarity and accuracy in completed forms, even when dealing with complex technical terms. The Reporting and Analytic Layer (RAL) within AIM-FE will analyze MDS forms and related data to extract actionable insights, crucial for operational decision-making at the fleet and vessel level. The Phase I culmination will be a practical demonstration using “2K” forms, showcasing AIM-FE's capabilities in a real-world Naval context. Developed using Streamlit, this demonstration will not only validate AIM-FE's effectiveness but also set the stage for further advancements. VISIMO's AIM-FE will be capable of significantly improving Navy maintenance processes, enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and operational readiness through cutting-edge AI technology.
