Research abstract

The current peer-review model for scientific literature publication is outdated and inefficient, leading to valuable research being overlooked. VISIMO proposes the development AI-enabled Sorting, Editing, and Review Infrastructure for Scholarly Knowledge in an Open Software Infrastructure (ASTERISK OSI), an open publication and review platform, and a series of editorial standards to modernize scientific and technical communication for the Department of the Navy (DON). This platform will support a variety of publishing goals, including flexible options to edit, review, comment, and compare related works, while curating publications, proposals, abstracts, presentations, data, algorithms, and other communications. ASTERISK OSI will leverage advanced computing methods and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to enhance the discoverability and quality of scientific outputs. The platform will ensure compliance with current academic review standards, including options for various blind reviews and a fully open review using a GitHub or Jira-like interface. The front end will be designed for accessibility, including colorblind considerations and compatibility with popular screen reading software. VISIMO’s Phase I work will focus on surveying current geoscience publication methods, assessing expected future US government open science standards, and developing a proof-of-concept system architecture.
