Research abstract

Firestorm Labs, Inc. (Firestorm) is a defense tech startup located in San Diego, California, founded in 2022 by a team of experts in aerospace engineering, hardware, robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) / machine learning (ML), additive manufacturing (AM), and US Special Operations. In response to the ever-evolving challenges posed by the Great Power Competition, Firestorm dedicated itself to providing innovative solutions that enhance the strategic capabilities of the United States. Our mission is to transform the current force structure by providing large numbers of low-cost, autonomous systems that introduce complexity and unpredictability into adversaries' operational planning, thereby enhancing the Air Force's capability to overwhelm opponents through mass and collaborative autonomy. Firestorm is executing one (1) Phase II AFWERX Open Topic small business innovation research (SBIR) sponsored by Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), one (1) Phase III SBIR with AFWERX Autonomy Prime, two (2) Phase I SBIRs with AFWERX, and is on contract with the Office of Naval Research (ONR). Additionally, Firestorm has supported Special Operations Command–Pacific with its Tempest modular unmanned aircraft system (mUAS) under the Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C5ISR)–Pacific Operations (C3PO) Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract. Firestorm has a $100M IDIQ with AFWERX Autonomy Prime to support objectives related to low-cost, fully modular, and additively manufactured uncrewed aircraft system (UAS). Lastly, Firestorm has raised more than $50M in investment from trusted venture capital partners, seasoned in areas of defense technology.
