Research abstract

The U.S. Navy has launched a comprehensive program to extend the service life of its fleet of aircraft, with the goal of having aircraft fly more than 50-percent longer than originally intended. Efficient utilization of maintenance resources is essential for aircraft service life extension. A current issue associated with the maintenance of aircraft platforms is the cost of single loop clamp cushion failures. Single loop clamp cushion failures can lead to unwanted friction, pipe breakage and/or damage to aircraft components, increasing cost and reducing fleet readiness. Failure stems from degradation of the elastomeric nitrile rubber used in current clamps, caused by ultraviolet light and ozone exposure. A Phase I feasibility study resulted in successful demonstration of alternative clamp cushions, which are resistant to degradation by ultraviolet and ozone exposure. The alternative clamp cushions met all performance requirements specified in MIL-DTL-85052/1C and MIL-DTL-85052B. The Phase II objectives are: (1) to prototype clamp cushions with superior mechanical and materials properties, (2) perform validation and certification testing, (3) establish plans for transition to the Navy, and (4) prevent faulty or inadequate clamp cushions from reaching the fleet.
