Research abstract

The objective is to take mathematical advances of subdivision algorithms used by the animation industry to create smooth surface meshes and extend to 3-D with good quality to best capture physics using CFD/CSM solvers for high-fidelity hypersonic vehicle design. We will automate the surface topology and initial quads creation using an improved MIQ algorithm. A robust bijective mapping procedure between subdivision and CAD B-Spline surfaces will be implemented. Auto 3-D volume mesh topology creation using a new concept of frame fields from geometries to open boundaries will be developed. We use MLCA subdivision to generate smooth hex meshes, which can be approximated using multi-block structured parametric volume meshes to enable discretization for CFD/CSM calculation. Mesh deformation and adaptation will be evaluated in the parametric space and convert back to physical domain that maintains C1 and C2 continuity. This program is anticipated to reduce the user time in structured mesh preparation by 70-80%, benefit CFD/CSM community for fast solution turn-around and design analysis. Success of this program will make a highly desirable product, as well as an invaluable research tool not only in hypersonic vehicle design and optimization, but also in many other markets that need volume mesh generations.
