Research abstract

VORAGO Technologies has designed a radiation-hardened ARM® Cortex®-M4 based microcontroller that addresses a requirement for Air Force space missions. Execution of a QML-V product qualification of the VORAGO microcontroller will demonstrate its suitability as the optimal ‘rad-hard backbone’ solution to close this capability gap and make it suitable for Air Force requirements. The Space Electronics Technology (SET) organization within AFRL will integrate the microcontroller into their space computing architecture testbed as the rad-hard backbone of the system. SET will evaluate the microcontroller in the testbed. VORAGO Technologies will support prototype chips and development tools for the SET architecture testbed and will provide qualified QML-V products suitable for a space flight experiment that is planned for 2021. The SET architecture testbed and flight experiments are key steps to demonstrate that the VORAGO solution effectively addresses and closes the technology gap that exists. When these experiments are complete, we would expect broad adoption of the solution across multiple Air Force, DoD and commercial end-customers. VORAGO Technologies will also provide ICs and development tools to Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center and the AFRL Small satellite Lab who have expressed a strong interest in supporting this project.
