Research abstract

In this SBIR effort we will collaborate with Dr. J.C. Campbell’s research group at the University of Virginia (UVA) in developing a high-power, high-speed, high-linearity photodiode (PD) receiver optimized for operation at 1 micron wavelength. In phase II, we will fabricate, characterize, package and commercialize the 1 micron photodiode that we have successfully designed and studied in our phase I base period. We will refine our current micro-fabrication, integration and packaging processes of the proposed modified uni-traveling carrier (MUTC) photodiodes for improved performance and yield. We will also construct test setups to fully characterize the developed photo receivers in both laboratory conditions and controlled environments to meet the request military standards. In addition, we will experimentally investigate a diamond sandwich photodiode structure to further improve the thermal limited MUTC photodiode power performance. We will develop the fabrication process and characterize the fabricated devices to show improved saturation power. At the system level, we will demonstrate the application of the developed 1 micron photo receiver by the construction and characterization of an analog microwave photonic link system with state-of-arts link components. We will configure the link system to meet requirements in today’s navy battlefield platforms. In the phase II optional period,
