Research abstract

Air-air and air-ground munitions systems have grown increasingly complex in the era of smart weapons. Aircraft Armament and Munitions Systems specialists must train to store, transport, maintain, inspect, assemble, arm/de-arm and load a growing inventory requiring increased knowledge, skills and abilities to understand sophisticated instructions; manage work environments, tools, equipment, component parts and fasteners; assess and manage quality; evaluate hazards and maintain safety. Information delivery tools needed to effectively and efficiently master these complex procedures lag the technological advancements of the munitions themselves. Managing work environments throughout assembly and handling processes while maintaining awareness of safety hazards lends additional complexity and risk to challenge of training competent technicians. Our objective: Create an optimized application on our proven Augmented Reality (AR)-based platform to deliver relevant component, system and process information and instructions via head-mounted display to aid training across all munitions tasks. The geospatially rectified AR platform will guide technicians through the weapons assembly process while tracking location of components, parts and tools in the workplace, delivering digital media to the point of use to guide and validate task completion significantly improving insight development, learning, productivity, quality, standardization, and safety reducing training time and cost, while increasing comprehension and training capacity.
