Research abstract

19th Air Force and Air Education and Training Command (AETC) have committed to using BMTN to address critical training gaps and to reduce instructor workload, however BMTN v3 capability requires both infrastructure and capability upgrades to fulfill 19AF’s full warfighting need. HAF/A3T declared the Battle Management Operator (1C5D) career field in a “crisis” state in November 2022 prompting a 33% increase in AETC annual programmed formal training students starting in FY24.  The Battle Management Training Next (BMTN) solution utilizes AI/ML voice recognition and synthesis capabilities to drive game behaviors and voice communications, replicate realistic live control training events and enable self-guided and paced training. Vectrona will perform the necessary research, development, testing and evaluation to provide a substantially enhanced BMTN Version 4.0 that satisfies the following technical objectives: upgraded core software architecture to enable improved game features and User Interface, dynamic threat presentations and maneuvering to enable variability during scenario execution that is responsive to student performance, scenario authoring and editing tools that allow users to create, modify, and save graded game scenarios, additional training scenarios for greater application of BMTN in IST and IQT syllabi, and an ALSA standardized communications training tool that supports high repetition training in labeling tactical pictures.  Additionally, Vectrona will conduct a study to evaluate BMTN use to maximize training value and establish a BMTN development environment in a Government sponsored software factory to deliver BMTN through AF supported platforms. The result will be enhanced warfighting readiness through more effective training, greater knowledge and skill retention, improved productivity, better use of training resources, and reduced errors.
