Research abstract

This program will develop an advanced multi-modal sensor system suitable for detection of chemicals and particulates for Total Exposure Health (TEH) assessment. The proposed Wearable Chemical Multi Modal Monitor for Total Exposure Health - WearCM3 is a fusion of modular sensor technologies for simultaneous measurement of key chemical species (O2, CO, CO2, SO2, NOx, CH2O, NH3, HCN, H2S), volatile organic compounds (VOCs). and particulates (1, 2.5, 4.0 and 10 microns) which can pose health risks to military personnel. The quality of breathing air is an important component of overall health, as contaminants found in a variety of situations, from working environments, to driving on a busy road, to indoor pollution may lead to increased risk of diseases and reduced performance. While a suite of methods and instruments for real-time air quality exists, the system consists of multiple devices requiring supporting equipment, and therefore not are suitable for person-portable or wearable deployment. Successful development of WearCM3 will provide a tool for TEH assessment, which will in turn provide valuable data for future definition of procedures based on the health hazards of operational environment.
