Research abstract

Lynntech and Purdue University aims to rationally design effective retrofits for photovoltaic (PV) installations located in the Pacific Flyway migratory corridor, based on what birds actually perceive.Vision in birds is entirely unlike our own, and what might seem very similar to us can be different to a bird species.Variation amongst different birds is considerable--what is visible or obvious to one species may be barely perceptible by another. In Phase I an initial understanding of bird perception of PV environments was accomplished, by analyzing the chromatic and achromatic contrast based on measurements in the Mojave Desert.Phase II research aims to demonstrate effective and deliberate manipulation of relevant objects at solar sites, using practical deterrent technologies that are commercially viable. The anticipated outcome will benefit solar site operators throughout the solar belt, including those on government lands, private commercial owners, and the general public.
