Research abstract

Analysts and operators need to know as soon as possible when their satellites are in danger, so that responses can be initiated to provide tactical protection. Numerica proposes the rapid innovation of an extensible, multi-source, multi-INT fusion framework, Athena, that includes a suite of anomaly detectors and event correlators, and an interactive visualization dashboard, to support the recognition of anomalous activities both within and across the ground and space segments of modern satellite systems. This work entails further development and maturation of the four layers of the Athena software stack that were prototyped in Phase I and demonstrated on real multi-INT datasets. Throughout the Phase II effort, Numerica will conduct V&V studies using additional real data sources, including real-time data feeds from a global telescope network and real-time flow captures from a large TCP/IP network. Numerica will also mature the Athena application programming interface (API) to allow external anomaly detectors to be plugged into the multi-INT fusion framework. At the conclusion of the Phase II effort, Numerica will demonstrate an end-to-end solution, beginning with the ingestion of real-time data feeds and ending with the generation of automated indications and warnings (I&Ws) and the recognition of anomalous space and cyber activities.
