Research abstract

DoD manages immense volumes of unstructured dataùdocuments, images, audio, and videoùstored across systems and in formats that are often inaccessible to AI tools. To fully leverage Generative AI (GenAI) applications, such as Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) and Large Language Models (LLMs), this data must first be transformed into AI-ready formats. Current approaches require custom, siloed data transformation pipelines for each application, resulting in excessive costs, complexity, and scalability challenges. These fragmented solutions lock DoD into brittle, vendor-dependent systems that slow progress and limit flexibility.áUnstructuredÆs proposed solution addresses these challenges by delivering a critical AI/ML scaffolding framework that rapidly transforms and orchestrates unstructured data into a robust GenAI data layer. Building on the success of our open-source foundationùused in projects like NIPRGPT and CamoGPTùour proposed solution provides advanced multi-modal transformations, true data layer orchestration, and a user-friendly, no-code interface. These capabilities empower users to configure data pipelines quickly and efficiently, eliminating the need for specialized expertise while ensuring modularity, interoperability, and vendor independence.áUnstructuredÆs proposed solution enables DoD to overcome the complexity of preparing diverse and complex materialsùtext, audio, images, and diagramsùfor AI applications. By creating a scalable GenAI data layer, we unlock the potential of GenAI technologies to streamline operations, enhance decision-making, and modernize mission-critical workflows. Unlike brittle, purpose-built approaches, our solution supports flexibility and adaptability, allowing DoD to integrate new techniques and technologies in a rapidly evolving AI landscape.áOur SBIR Phase II effort focuses on advancing the capabilities of UnstructuredÆs proposed solution through enhancements that optimize model performance and selection, improve scaling for large deployments, and enable edge compatibility for distributed environments. These enhancements will position our solution as a foundational tool for accelerating and scaling GenAI applications across both federal agencies and commercial markets. By addressing the unique challenges posed by DoDÆs vast and varied datasets, our solution enables rapid transformation into AI-ready formats, ensuring that Generative AI technologies can be deployed effectively and at scale.
