Research abstract

This proposal aims to develop an microalgae bioprospecting curriculum kit designed to improve science education for middle and high school students grades 7-12. Algae, a main photosynthesizer, offers a rich platform for teaching microbiology, sustainability, and experimental design. Despite its importance, algae is often excluded from classroom instruction due to perceived barriers such as complexity in cultivation and limited access to prepared educational tools. This project seeks to overcome these challenges by providing a comprehensive microbiology kit that integrates hands-on, IBL experimentation with NGSS curriculum materials. The curriculum kit will include materials and curriculum tailored to encourage student agency and engagement in introductory microbiology. Students will learn to cultivate algae, design experiments, and analyze data, building foundational skills in the scientific process. The Phase IA effort will focus on prototyping the kit and conducting pilot studies in diverse educational settings to evaluate usability, feasibility, and effectiveness. By addressing critical gaps in microbiology and biotechnology education, this project will empower students to explore real-world scientific practices while fostering a deeper understanding of sustainability. The curriculum kit has the potential to transform STEM learning and inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators.
