Research abstract

This project will create an AI-powered adaptive learning platform, transforming early mathematics education by integrating simplified ancient abacus methodology with advanced machine learning and an innovative read-aloud feature. Our technology uses computer vision and gesture recognition to turn physical abacus movements into digital interactions, forming a unique hybrid learning environment for children ages 5-7. The read-aloud component enhances comprehension and engagement by narrating stories and instructions, making learning more interactive. This innovation combines real-time cognitive mapping with storytelling to address a critical gap in early numeracy education. Phase I delivers a prototype showcasing: 1. Proprietary gesture-recognition algorithms for tracking finger movements in math calculations 2. Adaptive AI engine personalizing story progression based on cognitive patterns 3. Neural network-based visualization feedback system for mental math development 4. Read-aloud feature narrating instructions and stories to support learning The pilot involves 20 children from diverse backgrounds, using eye-tracking and cognitive load measures to validate our approach, aiming for a 40% speed improvement in mental math and a 50% engagement increase over traditional methods. This technology stands to revolutionize foundational math skill development for 2.3 million early learners annually.
