Research abstract

Neuromorphic event-based sensors (EBS) address critical challenges in military target detection and tracking within cluttered, dynamic environments. Unlike traditional frame-based cameras, EBS employ asynchronous, in-pixel event detection to reduce latency, power consumption, and data volume. By transmitting only temporal changes in pixel intensity, these sensors enable real-time AI-driven processing directly on-chip or facilitate low-bandwidth streaming for downstream analytics. This capability is particularly advantageous for high-speed phenomena such as muzzle flashes, hypersonic projectiles, and drone swarms.Building on advancements in dual-band infrared (IR) neuromorphic readout integrated circuits (ROICs), this work details the development of a two-color IR event-based smart camera. During initial phases, a dual-band event-based (DBEB) ROIC was designed, simulated, and laid out, paired with dual-band detectors optimized for fast temporal tracking. The proposed continuation focuses on ROIC fabrication, hybridization with IR detectors, and integration into a standalone prototype. Lab and field demonstrations will validate performance in scenarios requiring rapid detection and low-latency response. This innovation enhances third-generation forward-looking infrared (FLIR) systems, offering transformative potential for autonomous ground operations by combining embedded intelligence with reduced computational overhead.
