Research abstract

The DLA has a need to identify competent and qualified domestic suppliers for mission-critical items that are becoming increasingly scarce. Furthermore, as the number of systems deployed declines the business case for original manufacturers to support these systems becomes uneconomical resulting in unavailability of domestic sources of supply. At conclusion of the Phase I effort, Mentis will have addressed this concern through a reverse engineering and redesign effort to make long term sustainability more viable by leveraging affordable modern manufacturing technologies that were not available or selected during the legacy manufacture. The approach goes beyond reverse engineering and source development and provides longer term and broader sustainment opportunities by matching the manufacturing technology to the component technical requirements as well as the current demand signal. Mentis will demonstrate the re-engineering process from requirements definition through acceptance/qualification of design for manufacture changes, culminating in an Engineering Change Request to be submitted to the Engineering Source Activity of the system. At conclusion of the effort, Mentis anticipates working towards becoming an approved source for the selected component, able to bid on future production solicitations upon completion of the package, and capable of leveraging the service provided to other parts/systems.
