Research abstract

The DoD benefits of airborne electronic warfare (EW) and RF survey tools are substantial. The modern battlefield is increasingly defined by the electromagnetic spectrum, and adversaries are leveraging low-cost jamming, spoofing, and other EW tactics to degrade U.S. and allied forces' capabilities. Traditional spectrum monitoring and EW assets are expensive, limited in number, and often require manned platforms, making them vulnerable and difficult to deploy at scale. Ground-based EW units also face significant limitations, including terrain masking and range constraints. A drone-based EW mapping and RF collection tool, particularly one capable of monitoring frequencies from 900 MHz to 7 GHz, would provide persistent, distributed EW awareness. This capability would allow tactical units to rapidly detect and locate enemy jammers, monitor adversary communications, and conduct pre-mission spectrum surveys, ensuring forces can operate effectively in contested and denied environments. By deploying small, cost-effective drones with EW sensors, the DoD can extend the reach of EW operations, reduce reliance on high-value assets, and rapidly respond to emerging electronic threats across the battlespace.
