Research abstract

ATCs—whether in a tower, radar facility, or embedded with special tactics teams—are vital to AFSOC’s ability to execute missions globally. Despite their importance, ATCs are 39% undermanned with a 24.4% attrition rate, leading to a shortage of trainers and reliance on outdated, labor-intensive training methods. These legacy methods often result in unnecessarily high attrition among otherwise capable candidates, worsening the manning crisis as the US prepares for significant global challenges.ATReview enhances the current ATC training solutions—ATLIVE, ATTower, and ATXR—by introducing an objective, automated, and data-driven feedback system. This innovation enables trainees to train independently with automated grading, advancing them more efficiently and reducing backlog created by trainer shortages. Additionally, ATReview empowers instructors with tools for granular reviews of trainee performance, offering detailed analytics indispensable for refining training plans and addressing competency gaps. By adopting ATReview, USAF will ensure well-trained, deployment-ready ATCs capable of supporting AFSOC missions globally while establishing a feedback loop for systemic training improvements.
