Research abstract

Significant advantages occur in cost reduction, technology maturity, and ease of implementation when using commercial-off-the-shelf components and systems boards in critical military applications. Because COTS components are well documented reverse engineering their contents is very straight forward. The first layer of protection for critical technology is the physical volume that encloses the system components. Any attempt to modify, penetrate, or remove this outer enclosure is one of the first indications of a tamper attack. CRG proposes to create a volume protection scheme that would measure and use a multitude of physical volume attributes and create a volume signature that would be used for volume protection. Since the attributes are defined by the physical construction and composition of the volume they do not require power to maintain their values. CRG's demonstrated expertise in the proposed technology presents MDA the opportunity to obtain an effective, reliable, and economical volume protection scheme for protecting critical information components of the ballistic missile defense system. The proposing team's track record of innovation in new anti-tamper technologies positions CRG for successful implementation of an effective, reliable, and economical volume protection method meeting a wide range of MDA’s operational needs.
