Research abstract

STORM introduces a bio-inspired thermal gradient navigation system that treats thermal distributions as dynamic roadways, enabling autonomous deposition heads to navigate along optimal temperature zones while achieving natural collision avoidance through thermal "pheromone trails" similar to ant colony optimization. The system employs a distributed manufacturing auction protocol where each deposition head operates as an autonomous agent that continuously bids for optimal deposition locations based on thermal state, geometric complexity, and material flow requirements, eliminating centralized planning bottlenecks. A physics-informed predictive thermal engine combines reduced-order modeling with neural networks constrained by heat transfer equations to predict thermal evolution in real-time, enabling heads to anticipate optimal zones and avoid thermal conflicts before they occur. The swarm intelligence coordination framework enables emergent multi-head coordination through local interactions and multi-agent reinforcement learning, allowing natural scaling from N=2 to N?3 heads with non-linear rate increases through emergent optimization behaviors. The retrofit-compatible implementation architecture integrates with existing DED systems through modular sensor and control additions, preserving existing safety systems and operator interfaces while adding distributed intelligence capabilities.
