Research abstract

The ADAPTIVE Copilot proposal aims to advance the development of AI-assisted wargaming through three interconnected approaches: active scenario learning, multimodal counterfactual reasoning, and explainable AI methodologies. The framework aims to enhance military decision-making by dynamically modeling evolving combat situations, generating and analyzing alternative scenarios through counterfactual reasoning across multiple data modalities (including visual, textual, and numerical inputs), and providing transparent explanations for AI-generated recommendations. The proposed system integrates machine learning techniques with traditional wargaming principles to create an adaptive platform that can both learn from historical military engagements and simulate novel tactical situations, while maintaining human-interpretable reasoning chains that allow military strategists to understand and validate the AI's strategic suggestions.
