Research abstract

KBSI proposes to develop a Framework for Intelligent support of Smart Transducers (FIST) that will revolutionize the way in which flight test and instrumentation engineers design, implement, test and manage sensor networks by exploiting the inherent benefits of the smart transducer technology. FIST is modular, component-based, and platform-independent, and can be plugged into existing ISSs using a well-defined set of APIs. In addition, FIST supports the rapid development of customized smart sensor management applications from various components. All of this will accelerate the widespread adoption of the IEEE 1451 family of standard. The Phase I effort resulted in the FIST methodology and component-based software that validated the methodology for T&E applications. Under the Phase II effort, we will (i) develop reusable component-based FIST software that builds off the Phase I implementation, (ii) use FIST components to develop T&E applications that support smart sensor network design, commissioning, testing, and maintenance, (iii) develop smart sensor applications for condition based maintenance and homeland security, and (iv) transition FIST technology to the Air Force and other DOD centers. Benefits include rapid, customized smart transducer applications that result in reduced cost and increased reliability for both the sensor network and the system being instrumented.
