Research abstract

KBSI proposes to develop a Framework for Intelligent support of Smart Transducers (FIST) that will provide intelligent support for a large-scale deployment of clusters of smart transducers that support the IEEE 1451 standard. Composed of various reusable components for GUI and intelligence support for both transducer control level and higher action enabling information level, FIST can be plugged into existing Instrumentation Support Systems via a simple API. Also, standalone control applications can be rapidly configured using FIST components. IEEE 1451 enables the development of transducer networks independent of vendor or network protocol, and allows transducers to be replaced and moved with minimum effort, thereby eliminating error prone, manual system configuration steps. However, for widespread adoption of the 1451 standard, support is required for the basic operational scenario for installing and maintaining instrumentation systems, intelligence support at the higher level for automated device and network plug-and-play, and distributed control support. All of these and a well-documented methodology for smart transducer usage will accelerate the adoption of the IEEE 1451 standard. Our proposed FIST solution will address all these needs and will reduce time, effort and error in configuring and operating smart transducer networks.
