Research abstract

Keeping vending machines on a Naval ship filled with soda can be very time consuming as a result of the distance from the storerooms to the vending machines, lack of transportation aids, and the high per capita consumption rate of those onboard the ship. As manpower needs increase, devoting large amounts of time (up to six man-years for large ships) to stock these vending machines becomes a larger problem. A chill-on-demand technology would be an ideal solution to the unnecessary labor used filling vending machines. In the Phase I effort, Mainstream Engineering has demonstrated a technology capable of chilling a can of soda 25oF in 10 seconds. In this Phase II effort, Mainstream Engineering will transition its QwikChillTM Instant Can Cooler to a commercial product, available for production assembly and sale at the end of the Phase II option contract. This effort will include investigation and design of the optimal user interface, reliability testing, design optimization, production tooling, development of written and interactive maintenance manuals, and manufacturing production prototypes.
