Research abstract

Keeping vending machines on a Naval ship filled with soda can be very time consuming as a result of the distance from the storerooms to the vending machines, lack of transportation aids, and the high per capita consumption rate of those onboard the ship. As manpower needs increase, devoting large amounts of time (up to six man-years for large ships) to stock these vending machines becomes a larger problem. Mainstream Engineering has designed a "Quick Chill" system that can chill a can of soda from 70o F to 42o F in ten seconds, eliminating several inefficiencies resulting from any existing feasible solution (this is a conservative final temperature estimate). As the initial temperature of the soda increases, the cooling capacity also increases. In addition to being maintenance and labor free, it uses environmentally-friendly working fluids, and is much smaller and lighter than a vending machine. Based on the preliminary design and conservative calculations, Mainstream's Quick Chill would have to be used over 340,000 times in a single year to have the same power consumption as a vending machine.
