Research abstract

Black River Systems Co., Inc. and EnerLab, Inc. propose to develop techniques that can determine whether radar returns are from direct reception, bistatic reception of similar radars, or from advanced deceptive jammers. The primary focus of the proposed research is to investigate the feasibility of developing, testing, and implementing a conceptually new signal processing technique, Spatial-Temporal Differential Analysis, STDA, which will reliably discriminate real target returns from those of the most advanced deceptive jammers. The developed technique will provide a rapid insertion capability into existing, stand-alone radars, including coarse resolution monopulse radars, featuring computationally efficient, parallel digital signal processing. The technique does not require changes in the existing radar architectures or designs, utilizes existing A/D digital outputs, is considered as a complementary technique to existing radar signal processing and can be implemented in parallel with existing signal processing. The technique promises to be fully robust to specific characteristics of deceptive jammers such as range gate, Doppler, angular position stealing, or any combination of the above. The feasibility of using the same technique for discriminating direct radar returns from bistatic returns from similar radars is also outlined. Computer simulation models will be developed, providing a comprehensive modeling and simulation capability.
