Research abstract

Navy radar systems must operate in increasingly complex signal environments. The deployment of higher power transmitters and wider bandwidth waveforms causes energy to become spread out throughout the spectrum, leading to more unintended interference from nearby friendly radar systems. Advanced jamming systems such as digital RF memory (DRFM) systems are widely available and can produce complex deceptive countermeasures signals that are difficult to discriminate from target-oriented returns. The Navy is developing a new Multi-Mission Signal Processor (MMSP) that will be used in future radars. This proposed Phase I program seeks to develop an interference rejection algorithm that could be hosted in the MMSP. The focus in Phase I will be for countermeasure signals produced by a DRFM-based jammer. The program will design the algorithm, test it using computer simulated data to show its effectiveness, and evaluate the algorithm for its computational implementation requirements. An option task proposes to evaluate the algorithm on actual collected DRFM data.
