Research abstract

A single antenna covering a narrowband (~5%) portion of the RF spectrum around center frequencies of 11, 15, 20, 30, and 44 GHz would be required in the next generation of airborne communication systems being developed for war fighters. Another challenge comes from the required dual linear and/or circular polarization needed in conjunction with multiband operation in such systems. The technical objective of the program proposed here by Photonic Systems, Inc. (PSI) is to develop a radiating element that can be reliably manufactured and configured for operation in such a multiband array. Various multiband antenna element architectures that use size reduction techniques to enable proper spacing in a phased array will be evaluated. One or two approaches will be down-selected and the most viable and appropriate designs will be simulated using Microwave Studio (MWS), a commercial CAD software package purchased by PSI in 2005 from CST. Prototypes of the selected designs will be fabricated and tested in PSI's anechoic chamber to validate the simulation and confirm multiband operation.
