Research abstract

The next generation integrated strapdown seeker system for the THAAD missile requires a number of components packaged together such that multiple detection technologies can efficiently use all incoming photons. One of the critical components is a beamsplitter that efficiently transmits the (1064 ± Dl nm) wavelength (Dl < 10) from a wide FOV (up to 40°) while reflecting all other wavelengths (3-8 mm, and also 13-24 mm). Narrow FWHM (Dl < 10) beamsplitters are based on the resonance (i.e., the Fabry-Perot) technology. However, conventional resonant technology limits the application to narrow FOV, much narrower than the requirements in the present context. Tanner Research is proposing the use of a new class of beamsplitters based on the Tanner CRC technology. The CRC technology has been previously demonstrated at TRL 4, and is being currently developed to TRL 6/7 under other applications. During Phase I, we will work with guidance from BAE Systems, and demonstrate the feasibility of using our filters for the strapdown seeker application. This feasibility demonstration will be in the form of trade studies, and also proof-of-concept hardware demonstrations. During Phase II, we will partner with BAE Systems and implement the new beamsplitters in the strapdown seeker.
