Research abstract

The primary objective of the proposed Phase II effort is the development an advanced, predictive jet-in-crossflow model for operating conditions that are relevant to high-performance gas-turbine augmentors. The Phase II proposal will build upon the successes of the Phase I effort by (1) extending the CFDRC code to include an imbedded-grid Eulerian Jet (EJ) model for two-way coupling, (2) extending the CFDRC analytical submodels to a grid-independent two-way coupled SGS-JB formulation at UC Davis, (3) implementing dense-spray submodels for surface breakup, droplet coalescence, and evaporation into the CFDRC and UC Davis models, (4) experimental validation under realistic gas-turbine augmentor conditions from data collected by ISSI and data available from industry, (5) implementation of new models or the best combination thereof into the CFDRC and Fluent commercial codes, and (6) testing by industry representatives. The final deliverables to the Air Force will be a site license of CFD-ACE+ with the jet-in-crossflow model, a ballistic imaging system for dense-spray diagnostics, and a dataset representing realistic gas-turbine operating conditions. The transition to marketable software will take place through CFDRC, Fluent, Inc., and ISSI; a commercial ballistic imaging kit will be developed and marketed by ISSI.
