Research abstract

The combination of empirical spray modeling, dense- and dilute-spray diagnostics, and CFD simulation will be used to provide a more accurate spray-design tool for gas-turbine augmentors. A global model of liquid breakup and droplet dispersion will be assembled based on existing correlations for liquid-jet trajectory, surface breakup, column breakup, secondary breakup of droplets, and evaporation. The model will be validated for liquid-jet injection into a gaseous crossflow under augmentor conditions, including the effects of high inlet temperature and flame-holder geometry. A newly demonstrated diagnostic technique called ballistic imaging shadowgraphy, made possible by the availability of ultrafast lasers, will be used to capture high-resolution images through the dense-spray region. This will provide critical new data on ligamentation, jet-core instabilities, jet-core breakup, and dense-spray effects. A one-way-coupled Lagrangian numerical simulation will be used as the test-bed for parametric studies. Finally, a fully-coupled large-scale CFD simulation will be performed by our partners in the gas-turbine industry to test the performance of the global model.
