Research abstract

Nanohmics is developing a light emitting diode (LED) based strobe light system that emits intense light at 365 (lens fluorescence) or 520 to 550 nm light (eye sensitive) wavelengths to distract or disorient potential adversaries. This device is being developed as an alternative to a Stun Grenade for use in situations where pyrotechnic devices must be avoided. This capability will reduce the probability of both noncombatant and combatant casualties and eliminate the possibility of damage to collateral equipment and structures. In Phase I of the program Nanohmics demonstrated a LED based device that emitted in the 520 nm region. In Phase II of this program Nanohmics will increase the output intensity by a factor of 10 by using high-density custom packaging of the LEDs. Nanohmics will also explore use of xenon tubes with wavelength shifting phosphors as an alternative method to generate high luminous intensity at the appropriate wavelengths. As part of this program Nanohmics will implement programmable pulse intensity, sound generation, and thermal management. Operational tradeoffs between devices that emit at 365 nm and 520 nm will be examined. At the end of the Phase II program Nanohmics will deliver a field-tested, deployable alternative to the Stun Grenade.
