Research abstract

We are proposing to develop a novel concept based heat exchanger using a thermally conductive carbon foam material together with IJ Research’s innovative joining technology. Carbon foam offers more attractive thermal properties for heat exchanger than any current heat exchangers in the market, but has many inherent weaknesses. Its poor mechanical strength limits design and market use. The carbon material itself has been a problem joining with other component materials such as carbon, metal or ceramic; requiring the foam components to be joined by adhesive sealing. The specific configuration of the foam structure shows an undesirable high flow resistance with coolants. IJ Research is introducing promising solutions to overcome these problems. Joining the carbon foam or any other carbon product, as well as carbide is one of our well established in house technologies. The joining strength is far higher than the intrinsic strength of the carbon. The strength comes from our utilization of nanomaterials designed for a chemical reaction with the carbon foam structure. Flow enhancement will be achieved by a novel network microchannelling technique that we have developed over the last four years.
