Research abstract

US Army needs an improved reverse osmosis solution for their existing reverse osmosis modules, such as the Platoon Water Purification System (PTPS) or COTS equivalents that can produce twice (50 gal/hr) the water in 100lbs or less. To address the Army’s needs, Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) will develop the Portable Reverse Osmosis for Forward Lightweight Operations (PRO-FLO). PRO-FLO uses a novel pump and energy recovery device via modifying a proven COTS pump for lightweight and high pressure performance. These systems can pump twice the flowrate of the incumbent portable pump in half the mass and therefore can produce more water from a given feed stream, but are currently unable to recovery energy from the pressurized reject brine. Accomplishing that would lead to pump weight savings, allowing a larger membrane module to be packaged in the system without exceeding 100lbs and improving water production rate over the state of the art.
