Research abstract

Tanner Research has over 3-years experience with MEMS-based out-of-line S&A design and fabrication, including the development of embedded micro detonators, micro initiators and digitally controlled micro thrusters. The proposed work will address the problem of having seven (7) different macro-scale pyrotechnic devices in use within the THAAD missile system to provide rocket motor ignition and other energetics-actuated functionality. Tanner Research, with Pacific Scientific and Lockheed-Martin technical support, propose to develop a miniaturized pyrotechnic igniter device that is fully MIL-STD 1901A compliant. The proposed device will have the requisite S&A functionality being provided by an embedded micro-scale interrupter that is actuated electrically. The miniature S&A/AF igniter device, with embedded ignition interrupter, will be fabricated at Pacific Scientific for use by Lockheed-Martin within the THAAD missile system as a generic replacement component for all pyrotechnic igniter S&A devices. The proposed program will significantly reduce size, weight and cost of pyrotechnic igniters by about 90%.
