Research abstract

The expectation of chem/bio weapons proliferation over the next twenty years requires a pre-emptive response by our nation's forces. However, striking targets that house chemical or biological agents poses high risks for collateral release. If chemical or biological agents are released into the air in sufficient quantities, millions of people could be exposed unnecessarily. One potential solution is the use of submunitions that can gut, or `disable' the inside of a target while leaving the exterior walls completely intact. To advance this solution, SARA is developing a network/smartfuze technology that will enable attacking submunitions to share gathered target data, request additional sub-munitions as needed, and collaborate in defeating such a target with the amount/type of force needed to defeat WMD capability without disastrous collateral effects. The basis of this network is the ability to communicate through earth, concrete and even steel with proprietary SARA induction-based technology. SARA's success in demonstrating deeply buried communication capability in its SBIR Phase I will be leveraged in its proposed Phase II program, toward developing a fully functional brassboard through-ground communications system with integrated munition-localization capability
