Research abstract

This SBIR Phase II proposal is responsive to the MDA program objective to develop secure, long range, spectrally efficient, high data rate telemetry systems that are capable of communicating at distances of the order of 300 to 500 Km at data rates of the order of 20 to 30 Mbps. The TODS Phase I study program addressed the above MDA/TC program objectives and developed innovative spectrally efficient solutions to increase the broadcast telemetry range and the data rates within a limited available frequency spectrum. The proposed TODS system offers two benefits by alleviating the two primary limitations of the current telemetry systems, namely (1) it extends the telemetry broadcast range without increasing the RF transmit power at the mobile or the size of the ground-based telemetry tracking antenna system, and (2) it increases the telemetry capacity (data rate) using a spectrally efficient signal modulation scheme. The proposed TODS system solution also improves the telemetry data reliability requirement by employing a highly efficient coding algorithm. In this Phase II Program,Mayflower proposes to address the issue of wireless channel characterization in very high dynamics (up to 20 Mach) and to develop and demonstrate a working TODS prototype hardware system at L/S band. The TODS Phase II antenna demonstration will include a high data rate application, such as the MDA M-FASP program to facilitate its transition to Phase III.
