Research abstract

Tanner Research is proposing the advanced development of embedded arrays of micro thruster airflow actuators for use by DARPA in controlling µUAV airframes. Developing embedded airflow actuators will be leveraged by Tanner's four years of experience with integrating nano-scale energetics and MEMS-based devices for use in detonators, thrusters, initiators, gas generators, safe and arm and fuzing applications. Tanner's current micro-scale thruster devices integrate with microelectronics for digital control. As a detonator device, Tanner's design only requires 50 µjoules at 3vDC for initiation. Two MEMS-based fabrication processes comprise the high risk/high reward aspects of the program: the miniaturization of the existing micro thruster concept for implementation at very large array scale; and, the development of mass fabrication/loading techniques to demonstrate manufacturability.
