Research abstract

Muon Space is proposing a D2P2 SBIR to modify it's existing multispectral Electro Optic / Infrared (EO/IR) scanning payload into a Tracking Layer Variant that meets the requirements of the Space Development Agency (SDA) Missile Warning / Missile Track (MW/MT) mission. The PWSA currently deploys a homogenous Tracking Layer solution that is more susceptible to enemy mitigation methods. Through this SBIR, Muon will demonstrate through hardware modification, validation, and mission level simulation, that the existing multispectral EO/IR scanning payload can be modified to meet the MW/MT requirements and can provide near-persistent global coverage with the correct constellation design. The importance of the scanning solution is that 1) it is inherently resistant to enemy mitigation techniques for remote sensing satellites like Direct Energy attacks and 2) it offers a differing supply chain that is both more affordable as well as quicker to market than the existing staring sensor types employed by Tracking Layer. Testing will also be performed to demonstrate instrument sensitivity at 3 microns and to validate that multiple instruments on a single spacecraft is feasible. The overall final solution stemming from this program will result in a architecture that optimizes instrument, constellation and spacecraft performance to provide cost effective persistent solution that will allow for a higher resilience heterogenous constellation solution.  Key objectives to be achieved in this SBIR effort are:  Update the Super Lattice Structure (SLS) Focal Plane Array (FPA) to a modified chemistry. Improve sensitivity to ~3µm wavelength. Validate performance a minimum detectable target radiance for all MW/MT frequencies of interest. Determine filter layout and center frequencies for an updated MW/MT-specific butcher block filter.Characterizing the sensor and scanning mirror assembly disturbances, forces and torques. Quantify the impact of hosting multiple scanning instruments on the same spacecraft. Co-hosting multiple Tracking variant instruments can improve persistence. Finalize concept of operations, instrument design and constellation architecture that provides near-persistent coverage in SDA areas of interest while optimizing cost efficiency
