Research abstract

TelemeTrak, Inc. proposes a Self-Checkout System (SCOS) for tools in USAF CTKs (tool rooms), in many ways similar to retailer self-checkouts, but with both optical- and RFID-scanning.  AF-wide, this could free up 851 full-time equivalent airmen for more productive and meaningful work than standing in line.  Technical ApproachFar too much maintainer time (12.5%) is wasted standing in line at CTKs.  To cut this loss by Ľ, we’ll build a CTK SCOS by:modifying and adding features to our existing  products (already in service); andfocusing on self-checkout of those tools that are most frequently used. The goal is to help the USAF better achieve its mission   AF-wide, this can free up the full-time equivalent of 851 trained USAF maintainers vs. the alternative - continued reliance on CTK staff to conduct all tool checkouts.  Note that we are not proposing any change to procedures for checking tools back into the CTK; AFI 21-101 requires visual inspection of those items upon return. Our team includes three former USAF CTK custodians (a retired CMSgt, and two retired TSgts), two experienced serial entrepreneurs, and ten engineers.  In total, our technical and business development experts have over 210 years of combined tech industry experience building plus 84 years of USAF maintenance experience.  Our PI is the named inventor on 25 patents. Two of our issued and seven of our pending patents relate directly to the proposed time-saving and innovative approach.  TelemeTrak has six patents. The commercial variant of TelemeTrak’s solution is  at TRL 9 and is already in civilian / commercial use in logistics.  While it requires  RTD&E to fully meet DAF needs (including a new UI), a Phase II award will adequately fund the work needed.
