Research abstract

This proposal develops a low-cost wafer scale process to manufacture thin film lithium niobate material in the range of 300 nanometer to 3 microns thickness on suitable substrates, such as silicon or quartz. The process shall be capable of producing films with thickness variation less than 3 percent and surface roughness less than 1 nm. The manufacturing cost savings shall be shown to be at least 25% relative to current production techniques based on ion implant processes or less than $2000 per wafer. In addition, the process is inherently scalable and versatile, being capable of wafer scale production of different material films of various crystal orientations on arbitrary substrates at low cost and with minimal non-recurring engineering effort.
