Research abstract

The U.S. Air Force (USAF) faces increasing challenges in maintaining a competitive edge in test and evaluation (T&E) of mission-critical hardware due to the growing complexity of modern defense systems. Traditional testing frameworks are slow, labor-intensive, and fail to integrate effectively with the digital engineering revolution that is reshaping aerospace and defense. The Department of the Air Force (DAF) requires an innovative solution to bridge the gap between digital twin simulations and real-world hardware testing, enabling rapid iteration, interoperability, and cost efficiency. This Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) effort proposes to enhance and transition Testeract’s TestPoint framework, a commercially proven automated test system, into a Python-based hardware abstraction layer (HAL) optimized for Linux environments. The solution will provide seamless interoperability between digital twins and physical test hardware, ensuring that DAF test teams can validate designs in a virtual space before committing to costly fabrication. By incorporating digital twin-driven test automation, the proposed framework will reduce testing timelines, improve data-driven decision-making, and enhance sustainment efficiency. The project will focus on developing and deploying a modular HAL on a Linux-based operating system tailored for Air Force applications. It will implement and validate Python-based support for critical communication protocols, including MIL-STD-1553, Ethernet, UART, Digital I/O, and Analog I/O interfaces. Additionally, it will establish a scalable test framework with OpenHTF compatibility to streamline test case development while creating user-friendly graphical interfaces for device configuration and real-time debugging. A critical component of this effort is ensuring digital twin interoperability, enabling automated test execution with virtual models and seamless transition between digital and physical environments. This effort directly supports the 519th Software Engineering Squadron by accelerating test cycles and reducing sustainment costs. By modernizing automated test software development within a Python-based ecosystem, this project will empower USAF engineers with a cutting-edge, scalable testing framework that enhances operational readiness and ensures technological superiority in an era of evolving threats. Upon successful completion, this effort will not only transform DAF’s T&E capabilities but also unlock significant commercial market potential. The demand for Python-based automated test solutions extends beyond defense applications into aerospace, semiconductors, and industrial automation. By leveraging a proven commercial foundation, this adaptation ensures rapid adoption, sustained innovation, and long-term impact for both military and non-defense applications.
