Compression Molded Modular C/C

Cornerstone Research Group Inc. (CRG) proposes to demonstrate the feasibility of the compression molded C/C manufacturing to allow modular integration of aeroshell components while maintaining robust structural integrity of the entire system.ÝCompression molding can enable much more complicated features that minimize machining and joining, while greatly reducing system assembly costs relative to parts made using conventional C/C processing techniques. InÝaddition to providing the ability to manufacture complex geometries, it also provides the ability to incorporate stiffening/strengthening elements and fastening locations integral to the fabricated article.Ý In the Phase I Base effort, CRG will demonstrate the feasibility of the C/C manufacturing capability to allow modular integration of aeroshell components whileÝmaintaining robust structural integrity of the entire system.Ý Mechanical characterization of molded panels will define the shear limits, tensile limits and compression limits of articles produced using this manufacturing technique.ÝMultiple panels will be produced to emphasize a rigorous, repeatable and reliable process.
