Research abstract

The Duality engine, developed by Astro Mechanica, addresses the significant challenges faced by future Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) platforms, particularly in terms of extended operational ranges and cost per effect. This innovative hybrid electric combined cycle engine is designed to provide long-endurance subsonic and supersonic ranges, enhanced fuel efficiency, and substantial onboard electrical power. The Duality engine operates in three modes—turbofan-like, turbojet-like, and ramjet—maximizing efficiency and performance across various flight conditions. Its architecture supports both military and commercial applications, offering fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. The engine's adaptability extends to potential applications for future hypersonic weapon systems, making it a versatile solution for diverse mission profiles.Astro Mechanica's proposal includes a detailed Phase II work plan to design, build, and test a bespoke Duality engine variant aligned with CCA program requirements. The 21-month plan involves contract kickoff, operational use case analysis, trade space studies, engine design refinement, component development, prototype assembly, and ground testing. The project aims to demonstrate the Duality engine's potential to revolutionize propulsion for CCA platforms by providing superior range, speed, payload, and power capabilities. The commercialization strategy focuses on capturing a significant market share in the aerospace industry, with a particular emphasis on the CCA program and commercial refueling service providers.Astro Mechanica's team comprises experienced engineers and project managers with expertise in aerospace design, propulsion systems, and manufacturing. The company has built and tested three generations of Duality engine prototypes over the past 18 months, establishing a solid foundation for the proposed Phase II effort. The Duality engine's advanced technological innovations, including the use of high-power electric motors and advanced thermal management, enhance fuel economy and performance while reducing mechanical complexity and maintenance costs. This transformative propulsion system presents a promising solution to enable affordable mass and drive down the cost per effect for future platforms, ensuring air superiority in contested environments.
