Research abstract

Energized Composite Technologies, LLC (EzCT), in collaboration with the University of Central Florida, is developing groundbreaking Energized Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (eCFRP) technology for military applications. This innovation integrates energy storage with structural functionality, offering a transformative solution to the critical energy-weight challenges in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), electric vehicles (EVs), and soldier-portable systems. Unlike conventional batteries that contribute significantly to weight, eCFRP technology leverages the dual-purpose nature of carbon fiber reinforced plastics, creating "weightless batteries" with exceptional mechanical strength and energy density. This Phase II project builds upon proven Phase I successes, including the fabrication of ZnCFRP structural batteries with energy densities exceeding 180 Wh/kg, high cycle stability, and robust tensile strength of 400 MPa. Using innovative electrode and electrolyte designs, scalable manufacturing techniques, and advanced ANSYS modeling, EzCT aims to achieve energy densities of 200 Wh/kg and lifetimes exceeding 4,000 cycles. The project will deliver five 2ft × 2ft eCFRP panels ready for integration into military platforms such as UAV frames, vehicle panels, and wearable technologies.Key outcomes include:A 30-40% reduction in vehicle weight and a 40-50% increase in operational range.Enhanced UAV flight times by up to 50%, improving reconnaissance and mission reliability.Multifunctional applications reducing logistical burdens while enabling stealth operations. With patented technology and strong academic-industry collaboration, EzCT is strategically positioned to advance structural battery systems to Technology Readiness Level 6, ensuring alignment with Army electrification and efficiency goals. This innovation not only optimizes energy solutions for military operations but also extends to aerospace and disaster relief applications, demonstrating broad scalability and impact.
