Research abstract

Adena Power’s sodium solid-state batteries have the potential to deliver increased mission effectiveness to the warfighter at the lowest cost, with differentiating advantages compared to alternative battery technologies. The scalable, modular battery pack design provides the U.S. Army with enhanced operational flexibility enabling the energy/power performance, form factor, and size specifications to be tailored and scaled for specific military applications from ground vehicles to distributed grid-level support.Adena’s energy-dense cell architecture, simplified battery and thermal management permit a compact, scalable system that is modular, transportable, and adaptable, enabling energy storage to be deployed where the Army needs it, when it needs it, for as long as it is needed. ~500 kWh of energy storage can be packaged on a military standard 463L master pallet and deployed for use across all austere operational environments. Adena has an engaged pipeline of commercial/industrial customers. Phase 1 demonstrated the technical and commercial practicality of Adena’s technology to military microgrids and to support the charging of electrified transportation in austere environments (e.g., as batteries within tactical battlefield rechargers). In Phase 2, Adena will produce practical and feasible prototype energy storage solutions for field testing with Army stakeholders to show how they can operate across all operational environments.
