Research abstract

The U.S. Army requires advanced battery technology that meets stringent safety requirements, offers high energy density, and conforms to military-standard form factors for compatibility across various tactical applications. Current Li-ion battery systems are heavy, have limited energy densities, and pose safety concerns due to flammability and toxic byproducts.Piersica Inc. proposes a solid-state, high energy density Li-ion battery technology aimed at replacing standard Li-ion battery systems for the U.S. Army. Piersica’s flagship technology offers a 60% reduction in battery weight, energy densities >600 Wh/kg, longer battery utilization, non-flammability, and no toxic byproducts. This enables enhanced thermal stability, increased capacity, and fast charging capabilities while minimizing size and weight. It meets advanced safety requirements to pass stringent military-standard and form factors, enabling compatibility across various tactical applications.R&D proposed: the team will focus on integrating an innovative cathode active material, scaling up to multilayer pouch cell stage, and demonstrating performance through cell cycling. Deliverables: 15-layer pouch cell prototypes operating at 4.75V and achieving a capacity of approximately 12 Ah, specific energy density > 600 Wh/kg, detailed plan for scaling up the manufacturing of these solid-state batteries, and Army Transition Plan.
