Research abstract

nou Systemís Inc., technology innovators in Huntsville Al, are developing a next-generation Launch and Recovery System (LARS) designed to enhance UUV retrieval capabilities across the fleet by addressing the challenges of subsurface docking, ship motion, and adverse sea states. Our hybrid approach combines an inertially stabilized winched mechanism with a highly maneuverable ROV-equipped cradle, enabling precise station-keeping and dynamic UUV capture at depths up to 200 feet. In Phase I, we will focus on demonstrating key subsystems through scaled prototypes and controlled wave tank testing. Specifically, we will: (1) Develop and test a subscale cradle prototype to validate docking principles; (2) conduct wave tank experiments using an engineering test vehicle to assess performance in simulated sea conditions; (3) evaluate localization, soft-to-hard capture mechanics, and autonomous station-keeping algorithms; and (4) engage with NSWC stakeholders to refine system CONOPS and integration requirements for MLARS deployment. By the end of Phase I, we will have validated core system functions and established a clear pathway for full-scale development in Phase II, advancing our technology as a versatile, fleet-wide LARS solution for both military and commercial applications.
